Let me introduce you to Canicross—it's as simple as this: running with your dog!
You don’t need to be an athlete to enjoy Canicross. You can go at any pace, incorporate running intervals, or even stick to hiking.
The key aspect of Canicross is that your dog is encouraged to pull. While it's not mandatory for them to do so, pulling gives your dog a sense of purpose during the activity. This is especially appealing if you’ve struggled with a dog that tends to pull on walks, as this turns pulling into a positive, productive behavior.
(If your dog struggles with pulling on the lead during regular walks, we also offer training sessions to teach you how to get them walking calmly and confidently on a leash.)
Why I Love Canicross
-
Strengthen the bond with your dog
Canicross is a fantastic way to build a strong, trusting relationship with your dog. -
A game-changer for reactive or anxious dogs
If your dog struggles with reactivity, aggression, or confidence issues, Canicross can be transformative. This activity provides a healthy outlet for energy and creates positive experiences for both you and your dog. I’m passionate about helping so-called "problem" dogs through this sport—it truly works wonders. -
Exercise without feeling like exercise
Running with your dog can make 5k feel like 1k! You’ll be so focused on their joy and energy that you’ll hardly notice the effort you're putting in. -
It’s fun!
Canicross is an enjoyable way to keep both you and your dog active. -
Safe socialization for dogs
Group runs provide a safe, controlled environment for socialization while keeping dogs on-leash. -
Flexibility
Canicross can be done solo—just you and your dog—or as part of a group. Join our social runs to connect with like-minded dog lovers and share your experiences. -
Controlled exercise
Canicross ensures your dog exercises safely on a lead, which is perfect if they’re not allowed off-leash due to poor recall or other reasons.
Ready to Give Canicross a Try?
Book a session with me! We can:
- Run together with just your dog.
- Go on a joint run where I’ll guide you through harness options, running routes, clothing advice, and more.
No pressure to tackle a wild 5k on your first session—our time can simply focus on preparation and answering your questions.
At Essex Dog Services, we tailor every session to suit you and your dog’s unique needs. If you have concerns about your dog’s breed, behavior, or getting started, we’re here for both you and your canine companion.
Safety and Weather Considerations
Please note:
- This activity is weather-dependent. If a session needs to be rescheduled, substituted, or refunded due to weather, there will be no extra charge.
- Both you and your dog must be medically fit to participate. If you have any concerns, please consult your doctor.
- I cannot run with brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds for their safety.
- Your dog must wear a suitable harness for Canicross.
